Creative Workshops at The Haymarket Museum

Hello Prince William County friends and neighbors! We want to invite you to make 2019 a creative one and are so excited to announce registration is now open for the February Arts and Craft Workshops at the Haymarket Museum. These dynamic classes are designed especially for adults and children who are craving more creativity and and want to cultivate a deeper sense of community. Please register early as space is limited to 10 to 15 students to ensure an intimate and insightful experience for all participants.

Not sure which workshop is right for you? Join us for our Maker Open House every Friday in February from 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. and partake in an impromptu knitting, sewing or embroidery lesson. No registration required. Just pop on in!

Adult, Teen and Children Sewing Workshops

Geared especially for the beginner this sewing workshop is designed to teach the fundamental elements of sewing (threading, winding a bobbin, straight stitch, back stitch, top stitch, seam allowance and more) through a series of confidence building sewing projects. Students are welcome to bring their own machine or use one of our computerized sewing machines. The class fee includes instruction, materials and supplies.

Knitting for the Advanced Beginner

Thursday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. 
February 7, 14, 21, 28 
Instructor: Suzi Burns
Skill level: need to know how to cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, cast off
$80 + assorted supplies to complete the weekly project
Please bring a small project bag, scissors, tape measure, pen and notebook to class.

This class is designed to build upon the fundamental basics of knitting in this class you will learn how to read a pattern, knit in the round, increase and decrease, yarn over and a few advanced techniques to take your knitting to the next level. At the end of each weekly session, you will go home with a simple pattern and supply list to make a unique item practicing your newly learned skill.

Fundamental Knitting for the Beginner

A perfect winter hobby! Learn the basics of knitting with an experienced fiber artist of 25 years. Each class will introduce a fundamental knitting skill that you will practice making on your own knitted sampler. At the end of each weekly session, you will go home with a simple pattern to make a unique item practicing your newly learned skill. The class culminates with a pattern to make a unique cowl or scarf using all your newly learned techniques, and you will have the resources and knowledge needed to create beautiful hand knit items for yourself and others. This class will be jam-packed with information and instruction!

How to Sew a Cosmetic Bag
Saturday, February 9

Bring your own machine, 1 yard of cotton material, 1/2 yard of quilt batting, thread, 12" zipper, snaps, thread, scissors and a cutting mat, ruler and blade (if you have them) and learn how to sew a cosmetic bag with a zippered top closure and a snap flap closure.

Mixed Media Journal Design
Saturday, February 23
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Explore a wide range of mediums in this day long workshop centered upon a unique journal design. Suzi will show you how to craft a journal using basic bookbinding techniques and from there students will learn mixed media techniques and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the creative process. After this day of messy fun you will leave with the knowledge of new techniques, a new journal and feeling inspired.

Do you have a fancy DSLR camera and only shoot in the AUTO setting? Yes, you're not alone... this is a class for you! Join photographer Elisabeth Bryson to learn the basic skills of photography. This workshop will focus on the following important elements —  lighting, composition, settings and more. 

Materials needed for workshop:
DSLR camera is preferred, (any will camera will do, iPhone included)
Camera manual
Note pad and pen

About Elisabeth Bryson:

In 2010 while living in London, Elisabeth launched her photography business where she traveled to over 18 countries on various projects. Frequently requested by clients to photograph their events, Elisabeth’s photography can be seen in advertising in magazines, television and billboards. Elisabeth is a self taught lifestyle, event and product photographer and is a consultant for a Marketing and PR Agency. Elisabeth holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
